Ten artists who have participated in residencies at BoxoPROJECTS over the past ten years are featured in Boxo10x10, a 10th anniversary exhibition and celebration of exploring contemporary art at the new frontier. The exhibition and public programs run from November 19 through December 31, 2022.
The 10-year milestone offers a moment to reflect, celebrate, and look ahead. The residency, which launched in 2012 with Gosia Wlodarczak’s Frost Drawing for Joshua Tree, provides artists with an inspirational space outside their everyday context as well as a welcoming local community of fellow artists, subject experts, and independent thinkers. It offers an immersive experience to deepen knowledge about the area, encourages cultural exchange in the Joshua Tree and wider Morongo Basin communities, and provides a platform for public programs that share insights and educate audiences about their own regional, national, and global cultural experiences.
To date, Boxo has hosted and presented forty-six residencies, two visiting artists, one studio artist, fifteen exhibitions, and three editions of the Joshua Treenial.
For the celebration of our first decade of programming at BoxoPROJECTS, artists Jim Toia and Eli Hirtle created two new installations on the land and Heather L. Johnson presents a new installation in the studio. An exhibition in the studio and house features artwork by Kelly Berg, Ben Cuevas, Megan Evans, William Lamson, Ana Sanchez-Colberg and Gosia Wlodarczak. Several of the artists were present and participated in a panel discussion moderated by Mara Gladstone, Deputy Director and Head of Programs at Desert X.

On the evening of Nov 19th, Caroline Partamian and Ethan Primason presented The Golden Density. For Boxo10x10, Partamian and Primason designed a performance using the architecture and history of the Integratron to further explore the relationship between the space’s function as both an idealistic spiritual totem and a highly functional acoustic space. Using architectural plans and drawings from Van Tassel’s “Proceedings of the College of Universal Wisdom” Partamian and Primason constructed a series of sound sculptures and instruments to bring these two realities together in a series of short performances at the Integratron itself.

Saturday, December 17th, 2022: Vesna Pavlovic Community Slideshow
Community Slide Show is an opportunity to reactivate old technology in an environment of examination and introduction. Artist Vesna Pavlovic invites you to bring your old slides to this public viewing of our shared histories. Within an installation setting, audience members are able to share their personal histories, as well as sort through and project slides available within the installation.
BoxoPROJECTS is located at 62732 Sullivan Road, Joshua Tree, CA 92252. Highway 62 to White Feather, south on White Feather to Sullivan, west on Sullivan). Please do not use GPS though Google Maps and Waze directions are correct.
Though the exhibition reflects our program through the lens of these artists, all past participants have left their traces and are recognized. Several artists from the residency, and the Joshua Treenial, are represented by their long-term installations on the land and all have contributed to the energy and impact of the program. We are very grateful to all past and present participants as well as to the generous supporters who help make the program possible.
