Shawn Skabelund: Tree of Pain

BoxoPROJECTS is very happy to present Tree of Pain: A shoot from the parched Earth, an environmental installation by Shawn Skabelund. The installation addresses climate change as much as it deals with the political climate: Climate change denial, the rollback of Federal protection for the land and the inhumane treatment of migrants. Using found materials as well as borrowed elements, the work fills the space with a sense of decay and detritus and the silent witness borne of Nature.

Shawn is from Flagstaff, AZ. His work focuses on what Wendell Berry calls the “unsettling of America,” namely, the effects, the marks, and the changes that humans make on specific landscapes across the U.S. As a place-based installation artist, he has been exploring historical and contemporary manifest destiny for nearly thirty years.
