Area Zero: Yucca Valley (workshop)
Nov 7–9, 10am-3pm
Public performance Nov 9, 2pm
57275 Canterbury St, Yucca Valley, CA 92284
Leah Bachar, Nathaniel Ober, and Haydeé Jiménez lead this three-day immersive workshop exploring sound, space, and movement through creative storytelling as a tool for community building, resistance, and celebration in the borderland regions. The workshop engages participants in hands-on creative processes that are accessible and deeply connected to the land — a space to collectively create and build sustainable communities in the desert’s complex, ever-changing landscape. The final day includes a session where participants collaborate to weave their individual stories into a shared narrative performance that will be free and open to the public. The piece will be broadcast as a public radio program.
Mycomaterial Workshop with Sam Shoemaker
March 28, 2026 9am-4pm
57275 Canterbury St, Yucca Valley, CA 92284
L.A.-based artist and mycologist Sam Shoemaker leads a hands-on workshop exploring the sculptural and material potential of living fungi. Participants will learn how to cultivate and shape mycelium into a variety of functional materials. Each attendee will build, inoculate, and take home a light fixture made entirely out of mushroom mycelium. After receiving an MFA (sculpture) from Yale in 2020, Shoemaker created Myco Myco, a studio and laboratory dedicated to mushroom cultivation, sculpture, and mushroom materials. Widely exhibited in Los Angeles and abroad, Shoemaker has led numerous workshops at venues including Art Center College of Art and Design, Claremont Botanical Garden, South Coast Botanic Garden, and Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery.
