COMPOUND YV
Beyond Plein Sight
Nov 16, 10 am–2 pm
55379 29 Palms Hwy, Yucca Valley, CA 92284
Meet at Compound YV, drive to Black Rock Canyon Campground
In this day-long plein-air painting workshop, desert-based artists Eric Nash and Rachel Rickert, students of Copper Mountain College, and community members join in meditative walking, painting, and creative interplay with the desert landscape. Practitioners will discuss and learn about the ways artists have historically drawn inspiration from the desert’s unique environment, from early painters to visionaries like Noah Purifoy; share outdoor painting techniques; take time for contemplation of their surroundings and composition making; and better understand the materials and process for plein-air painting so that they might incorporate it into their own lives.

Ecosomatic Landscapes
Nov 14, 4pm
55379 29 Palms Hwy, Yucca Valley, CA 92284
A movement-based performance-in-progress by Stephanie Zalatel, an artist originally from the Mojave Desert region of Las Vegas, Nevada. Zalatel’s CalArts Master’s thesis explores the intersection of ecology and movement through ecosomatics, an emerging interdisciplinary field that can be viewed through both poetic and scientific lenses. Their site-responsive dance work investigates the relationship between the human body and the desert landscape, framing the land itself as an active audience.
