Conni McKenzie, a Bay Area-based producer, is a multidisciplinary artist with a primary focus in dance theater, video production, mixed-media, and photography.
At BoxoPROJECTS, Conni conducted research for workshops and performances that form her project Borrowed which addresses the urgent need for action against climate change and its impact on marginalized communities. This immersive experience enables audiences to examine how humanity has disproportionately used Earth’s resources, “borrowing time” from the planet, marginalized communities, and ourselves. Through nature and the arts, “Borrowed” offers a unique opportunity for self-discovery and aims to increase synchrony between the community and the environment. This project takes a multi-faceted approach, integrating performance, community engagement, education, embodiment, and environmental advocacy. By proposing community-driven solutions to climate change that address collective reform, “Borrowed” leaves audiences not only educated but also inspired and empowered to take meaningful action within their own communities.
These immersive experiences were held at Black Rock Nature Center in Joshua Tree National Park on May 11 and May 12, 2024
