Olivia Parkes
BoxoPROJECTS welcomes Olivia Parkes, a British-American artist who lives and works in Berlin. The painter, whose work explores how image culture affects the way we experience the world, will create a body of work related to the myth of the West as portrayed by the entertainment industry and its role in structuring perceptions of the U.S. military stance. The month-long residency will include screenings of classic Western films (see below) and related discussions, and will end with an open-house exhibition in mid-March.

The Old Corral: BEST OF THE WEST
Please join us for a series of screenings in conjunction with a residency for Olivia Parkes whose work explores how image culture affects the way we experience the world. During her residency, the artist will create a body of work related to the myth of the West as portrayed by the entertainment industry and its role in structuring perceptions of the U.S. military stance.
Monday February 23 @ 7.30pm: The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)
In this classic, wanderers Gil Carter (Henry Fonda) and Art Croft (Henry Morgan) ride into a small Nevada town plagued by cattle thieves. Initially suspected of being the rustlers themselves, Carter and Croft eventually join a posse out to get the criminals. This low budget masterpiece turns the genre to an intense examination of frontier justice’and an indictment of mob rule. To lighten things up, you get to look at Henry Fonda.
Sunday March 1 @ 7.30pm: High Noon (1952)
In this controversial western classic, Gary Cooper as Will Kane must delay his retirement as town marshal on the morning of his wedding to Grace Kelly, when he learns that the outlaw Frank Miller has been set free and is coming to seek revenge on the man who turned him in. With original soundtrack by the glorious Tex Ritter!
Sunday March 8 @ 7.30pm: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
This late John Ford masterpiece pits the sincere lawman Jimmy Stewart against the rugged rancher John Wayne. When a malevolent outlaw and the woman they both love get thrown into the mix, you can only watch to find out: who will get the gunman, and who will get the gal?
